Nuestra Señora de Salvacion has drawn devotion in Tiwi for 250 years. Why the diocese held the jubilee there and not in Legazpi, and what the record leaves out.
The Diocese of Legazpi marked 250 years of devotion to Nuestra Señora de Salvacion and 50 years since her canonical coronation as Patroness of the Diocese, in a single solemn ceremony in Tiwi, Albay. The ceremony was held on Saturday, 22 August.
Two anniversaries were observed, and they do not run on the same clock. The devotion is the older one, a practice carried by ordinary people across generations. The canonical coronation is an act of the Church, formal and dated, and it came much later.
The arithmetic puts the devotion’s beginning around 1776 and the coronation around 1976. Those are subtractions from the anniversaries the diocese announced, not dates taken from a record, and the difference matters if you are writing either one down.
A canonical coronation is a formal recognition by the Church of a particular Marian image, granted through a decree. It isn’t a local decision made and announced in the same week. That is why the 50 year mark carries weight here: it is the anniversary of the Church putting its own seal on a devotion Bicolanos had already kept for two centuries by then.
The ceremony was held in Tiwi, not in Legazpi. That placement is the story. A patroness of a diocese covering the whole of Albay has a home parish, and the observance returning there says where the devotion is actually rooted.
For a region that measures its Marian calendar largely in Peñafrancia, Albay has its own centuries-old devotion, with its own dates and its own crowds. Nuestra Señora de Salvacion is a Tiwi devotion before it is a diocesan one, and 250 years is a long time for a practice to hold in one town.
Three things would fill this in. The diocesan calendar, if the jubilee runs past August, since that determines whether this was the observance or the opening of one. A statement from the diocese giving the founding and coronation dates properly, which would replace the arithmetic above. And the parish in Tiwi, which holds the local record and the attendance.
We’ll correct the 1776 and 1976 figures here the moment the diocese publishes the actual years. Until then the diocese and the parish in Tiwi hold the detail, and we have marked plainly which of the years above we worked out ourselves.
